Summer is coming.
And if you want to feel genuinely good in your body this season — not just look good on the outside but actually feel light, energised and alive — it starts now. And it starts inside.
Not with a new skincare routine. Not with a detox. Not with anything that costs a lot of money or requires a complete lifestyle overhaul.
Just three simple lifestyle shifts that work with your body rather than against it.
Here they are.
1. Get Outside and Walk in Natural Light Every Single Morning
This one sounds almost too simple to be worth mentioning. But the impact it has on your gut, your skin and your overall wellbeing is genuinely remarkable.
When you expose yourself to natural light in the morning — ideally within the first hour of waking — you set your cortisol rhythm for the entire day. Cortisol is not just your stress hormone. In the morning it's your wake up signal. It tells your body it's daytime, kick starts your digestion and regulates the internal clock that your gut microbiome runs on.
When that clock is set properly your gut bacteria work in rhythm with your body. Your digestion is more efficient. Your energy is more stable. Your sleep that night is better. And your skin reflects all of it.
Twenty minutes outside in the morning. No sunglasses if you can manage it. Just light, fresh air and movement.
2. Swim in the Ocean This Summer
With summer coming this one feels perfectly timed.
Most people think of a swim in the ocean as just a nice way to cool down. But for your gut microbiome it's actually something quite special.
Seawater is rich in minerals — magnesium, potassium, iodine, that support gut function, reduce inflammation and feed beneficial bacteria. And exposure to the natural microorganisms in the ocean actually introduces diversity to your own microbiome in a way that no supplement can replicate.
There's also the nervous system piece. The cold of the water, the rhythm of the waves, being fully present in your body in nature: all of this activates your parasympathetic nervous system. Your rest and digest mode. The state your body needs to be in to actually absorb nutrients, reduce inflammation and heal.
So this summer, get in the water as often as you can. Not as exercise. Not as a wellness protocol.
3. Check What You're Putting on Your Skin
This is the one most people don't connect to their health, and it's one of the most important.
Your skin is your largest organ. And everything you put on it gets absorbed directly into your bloodstream. The average person applies over 150 different chemicals to their skin every single day through moisturisers, deodorants, soaps, sunscreens and makeup — many of which are known hormone disruptors.
Hormone disruption doesn't just affect your hormones. It affects your gut. Your gut bacteria are exquisitely sensitive to hormonal changes and when those hormones are thrown off by synthetic chemicals absorbed through the skin your microbiome feels it.
This summer swap just one conventional product for a natural alternative. Start with your body cream or your deodorant — two of the highest absorption areas on your body. Read the label. If you can't pronounce most of the ingredients it's worth questioning what they're doing inside your body.
